The Tennessee College of Applied Technology at Nashville (TCAT Nashville) is one of top colleges of the 27 Colleges of Applied Technology in the state, offering a wide array of educational training programs and courses that specialize in transportation and manufacturing, human services, and health programs.

The Need for an Ultimaker:

To continue their mission of providing the utmost quality workforce development for Tennessee residents, TCAT Nashville implements additive manufacturing courses into their programs and also offers specific associate level certifications that require educational training on FFF machinery. With the hope of not only adding a machine to provide additional hands-on experience for mechanical drafting students studying SolidWorks, but also acquiring a powerful machine that could be utilized in TCAT Nashville’s additive manufacturing lab, the college was in need of a machine that offered ease of use, simplicity, and flexibility unparalleled by their other FFF printers at the time.

“Being a huge fan of Dassault Systemes and SolidWorks I decided that if the Ultimaker was worthy of inclusion in this certification training then it really should be a part of additive manufacturing lab as well. That combined with the fact that Ultimaker is represented in my area by 3DOLOGiE, people I know and trust, made the decision to buy a S5 Pro very easy indeed.” Adam Wills, The Tennessee College of Applied Technology at Nashville.

Ultimaker Benefits:

TCAT Nashville is now coming up on a year with their Ultimaker S5 Pro and have found the system to be nothing but reliable and accurate as it has already been ran for hundreds of trouble free hours. With a large build chamber and the ability to use a wide array of polymers, the Ultimaker S5 Pro has been and continues to be one of the greatest assets to the college’s additive manufacturing setup. Building with PLA, ABS, and Nylon has never been a problem for TCAT Nashville, but the ability to run PC (polycarbonate), CPE (co-polyester), and TPU 95A (thermoplastic polyurethane) added the flexibility that the college was looking for and could only find with the Ultimaker S5 Pro.

“Another benefit we have experienced with the S5 is how easy and simple it is to change out the print core. Anyone that has used an FFF for any amount of time will tell you that clogged nozzles and worn-out print heads cause nothing but headaches and down time. With the Ultimaker S5 Pro we have not experienced any of those problems because of the quick-change print cores.” Adam Wills, The Tennessee College of Applied Technology at Nashville.
