Today’s fused filament fabrication (FFF) 3D printers are more popular and more accessible than ever. No longer a novelty, they are used as an everyday tool to accelerate innovation in studios, labs, workshops, and schools worldwide. But their increased popularity has triggered an increased concern: How does the process of melting and depositing thermoplastics affect indoor air quality?

As the global scientific community conducted deeper research into this question, their findings made us aware that in some situations FFF 3D printing could have a negative effect on air quality. At Ultimaker, product safety is one of our highest priorities. We therefore took these findings seriously and carefully investigated the question.
